Unity Church of Brownsville

Our History

In the late summer of 1986, Jeanne Nye having tired of driving to McAllen to attend a Unity church, called Unity Headquarters and asked for help, starting a church in Brownsville. They connected her to Rev. Patsy Havin who visited Brownsville in the summer of 1987 to get things started.

In the fall 1987 a handful of people gathered at Furr’s Cafeteria in Brownsville after seeing an ad in the local “Bargain Book” magazine which said, “Readers of the Daily Word, call this number.”  Rev. Patsy Havin had been led to pioneer a church in Brownsville and with that meeting began Unity de la Frontera.

Our church was incorporated in 1992 under the name Unity Church of Brownsville.  Our current site was purchased in 1996 and we held our first service in our present home in August 2006.

Over the years various ministers, as well as Spiritual Leaders have provided Sunday services, various classes, seminars, and a lay ministry program, as well as a program for our youth.  Our congregation grew as we held evening gatherings for our Hispanic Community, participated in various community projects such as feeding the hungry through Good Neighbor House and supporting local organizations such as Maggie’s House and Sunshine Haven Hospice Care.

Like many churches, Covid-19 has changed our look.  We developed a rotation of gifted Spiritual Leaders who provide our Sunday worship lessons.  You can enjoy our Sunday service in person, or on zoom.  Now we have opened our doors not to just the Brownsville community, but to the world.

It is an exciting new journey and we invite you to come along.
